Set in a paradise garden with a rich heritage of flora and fauna, Sri Lanka has also been famously known for the tradition of cultivating and beautifying land for aesthetic purposes. Going a few thousand years back in time, some of the ancient botanical gardens in Sri Lanka are among the oldest known to exist in Asia and are unparalleled in terms of beauty and magnificence.

Featured as royal pleasure grounds during the Kandyan kingdom, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens were established as such in 1821 after the kingdom was seized by the British and is considered among the most prominent of botanical gardens in Sri Lanka . The beautifully manicured Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are 150 hectares of exotic splendour displaying over 400 varieties of indigenous tropical plants.

A few miles south of Nuwara Eliya, also known as ‘Little England’, Haggala Gardens Sri Lanka is a rich floor of roses, ferns and shrubs and offers stunning views of the glorious scenery. The home of a troop of purple faced monkeys is found at the Virgin Woodland just above the Haggala Gardens Sri Lanka .

Another one of the popular botanical gardens in Sri Lanka is the Henarathgoda Botanical Garden established in 1876 and located in Gampaha. The paddy fields nearby, the hum of the singing birds, the astoundingly green environment and the meticulously flowing water streams are nothing short of beautiful. The first imported rubber tree can yet be found within the precincts of the garden.
