A UNESCO world heritage site, the Kandy temple of the tooth relic, locally known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa, is one of the most important attractions in Kandy, with thousands of visitors every year. This sacred Buddhist shrine is said to contain the sacred right canine of Buddha and is thus considered a prime monument.
The Kandy Perahera, the celebrated festival where the golden casket containing the sacred tooth is paraded in a vibrant and colourful pageant is one of the main attractions in Kandy.
The Kandy Lake created by the last king of the Kandyan empire and known locally as the kiri muhuda is a must see. Additionally, the Kandy Lake Club and Cultural Centre where many fire dancers, kolam dancers and numerous other traditional dancers are showcased in this beautiful city.
Some of the other important attractions in Kandy include the Embekke Devale, the National Museum, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the Knuckles mountain range.
